Overview

Dental cavities are a common problem that develop when bacteria invades through the enamel of your teeth. Previously, cavities were treated with an amalgam material, a mixture of different metals, such as mercury or silver. We now know that these fillings don't bond well with the enamel and the mercury is hazardous to your health. At Implant & General Dentistry in Murfreesboro, TN, Andrew Flipse, D.M.D. uses tooth-colored fillings made with a composite resin to fill cavities and protect the tooth. Dr. Flipse can also take out metal fillings and apply composite resin fillings for a more reliable and more attractive treatment of cavities. Additionally, he now uses the Fotona LightWalker laser system to deliver tooth-colored fillings, which means no drilling, no anesthesia, a lower risk of irritation, incredible precision, and shorter appointment times! If you think you or your child has tooth decay, contact us to make a dental exam today.

Best Candidates

Tooth-colored fillings often fill in the tooth once the decay has been removed by Dr. Flipse. Composite resin is a useful material that may be used to treat other problems with your teeth, such as chips or enamel that has been worn down by bruxism (teeth grinding). Since the material is tinted to blend with your teeth, tooth-colored fillings may be placed on the back and front teeth for a great appearance. If you have amalgam fillings, talk to Dr. Flipse about getting them taken out and redone with composite resin.

What To Expect

Receiving a filling at Implant & General Dentistry is typically an easy process. The treatment area will be numbed to help you feel more comfortable, but many times this is unnecessary when using the laser. Stronger sedation methods may be considered for any fears or dental anxieties to keep you relaxed. Once you're ready, the decayed tooth structure can be removed precisely and cleanly by Dr. Flipse using the Fotona LightWalker laser. Once the decay is removed and the area is disinfected, the space will be replaced with the composite material and set or "cured" with a special light. Dr. Flipse will smooth the filling so it matches your other teeth.

Recovery

You will be able to resume your day once your tooth-colored filling is complete, but you may notice a sensitivity to cold and hot foods and beverages for a few days. You can use nonprescription pain relief medication to address any discomfort; however, you shouldn't experience any serious problems. If your filling seems too high or uneven, please call us. Your filling should be cleaned by following a regular home care routine, including daily flossing and brushing. During your annual dental exam, Dr. Flipse will check your filling to determine if it should be replaced or repaired.

Insurance Coverage

Composite resin fillings are a standard treatment for dental cavities that are typically covered, at least in part, by insurance. A team member will talk to your dental insurance company to understand your coverage so we can calculate your personal cost. If you don't have dental insurance, our administrative team will go over the payment methods we accept at your appointment.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Dental cavities may begin as a common problem, but it is crucial to have them treated before they develop into a larger problem. At Implant & General Dentistry in Murfreesboro, TN, small areas of tooth decay may be treated with tooth-colored fillings. Dr. Flipse makes sure to match the shade of your teeth so you can have a seamless, healthy smile.
