Overview
With advances in the dental industry being made every day, it's no wonder why progressive dental practitioners are beginning to move away from the use of traditional 2D digital x-rays. Leading dentist Dr. Andrew Flipse makes it a point to be ahead of the curve by using 3D cone beam CT (computed tomography) technology at Implant & General Dentistry. This state-of-the-art, full-cranial cone beam CT provides Dr. Flipse with highly accurate 3D radiographic images of your mouth (teeth, gums, nerve pathways, and bone), allowing him to make effective diagnoses, assessments, and treatment plans. These 3D images offered by the cone beam CT are more efficient than 2D digital x-rays because with 3D imaging, Dr. Flipse's visual scope of your mouth increases exponentially, enabling him to see a wider range of oral health issues or abnormalities that may exist. Best Candidates
If you arrive at our office with a specific issue or concern, Dr. Flipse may use the 3D cone beam CT to get a comprehensive view of your mouth to assess your problem as accurately as possible. Dr. Flipse may also perform a 3D cone beam CT scan on your mouth before treatment planning for various procedures, such as dental implants, bone grafting, root canals, and wisdom teeth removal. This technology will allow Dr. Flipse to approach your situation and condition at multiple angles, ultimately selecting the treatment option that best meets your needs and expectations with the most effective output.
What to Expect
Before the cone beam CT scan is performed, Dr. Flipse will ask you to remove any jewelry or accessories that could potentially interfere with the reading. During the scan, an x-ray beam that is shaped like a cone moves around you, producing several high-quality images of your mouth that will allow Dr. Flipse to assess your oral health and effectively prepare for an oral procedure.
Since all cone beam CT imaging machines expose the patient to an amount of radiation, it's important to Dr. Flipse to minimize the radiation exposure you receive with each scan. Dr. Flipse can do this by focussing the scan on the area of concern, such as the temporomandibular joints (TMJ), if you are experiencing jaw clicking or popping rather than performing a full scan of the mouth.
Follow-up
Based on what is discovered from the results of your 3D cone beam CT scan, Dr. Flipse will either move forward with developing a treatment plan to address your needs or plan your oral surgery accordingly. You will not experience any pain from the cone beam CT scan, and you will be able to return to your daily routine following your exam. If any additional appointments are required for your treatment process, they will be scheduled accordingly at our dental office.
Insurance Coverage
Since the 3D cone beam CT technology is performed in accordance with diagnosis or treatment planning, some of the costs of the scan may be covered by your dental insurance. Our office will contact your provider to determine your coverage and out-of-pocket costs. If you have additional costs, or if you do not carry dental insurance, our office can assist you in finding low-interest medical financing.
