Overview

When a single tooth is worn down or damaged, it may be saved with a crown. Sometimes called a cap, dental crowns are custom made to cover the needed tooth and are colored to blend with your natural teeth for an attractive finish. At Implant & General Dentistry in Murfreesboro, TN, a crown can treat a large cavity, strengthen a damaged tooth, hold together a crack, or mask discoloration. Our dental office creates crowns with a choice of materials to meet your needs, including metal, porcelain, and metal covered with porcelain. Make an appointment with seasoned dentist Dr. Andrew Flipse to find out how a dental crown may repair or strengthen a damaged tooth while also improving the total health and appearance of your smile.

Best Candidates

Dental crowns may be used for several different reasons. They can be placed to cover a tooth weakened by decay to prevent it from chipping or it can hold parts of a tooth together that have already cracked. Dental crowns may also be used to fix a tooth that is loose or extremely worn down. In addition, they can strengthen a tooth with a lot of decay that cannot be corrected by a tooth-colored filling, serve as part of a dental bridge, or cover discolored or misshapen teeth. Crowns may be glued over your tooth or connected by an implant. The crown's material is usually selected with consideration to where it is being placed. Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) or metal crowns is generally stronger, which makes them better suited for the back teeth that are less visible. Ceramic or porcelain crowns are typically used on the visible teeth and matched to the shape, color, and size of your teeth. During your consult, Dr. Flipse will go over your choices and help you choose the best dental crown for your needs and budget.

What To Expect

During your consult, Dr. Flipse will attain dental impressions so your crown can be made to fit your tooth. In some cases, a temporary dental crown may be used to cover your tooth as your permanent crown is being crafted. As soon as your crown is made, the treatment area will be given a local numbing anesthetic. Other sedation techniques may be used to help you feel more comfortable during the procedure if you have any fears or anxieties. When the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Flipse will prep your tooth by cleaning away any areas of decay, then lightly file the enamel to create space for your dental crown. Your restoration can be either glued to your tooth or connected to an implant. Once set, we can adjust the crown's fit so it is comfortable.

Recovery

Unless sedation was used, you will be able to leave our office once the procedure is done to continue your daily activities. Dr. Flipse or a member of our team will go over how to care for your new crown, including any foods that should be avoided. During your exams at Implant & General Dentistry, Dr. Flipse will evaluate your dental crown and adjust it to keep it comfortable. He will let you know when your crown should be replaced; however, with good care, it may last for several years. If you experience any problems with your crown (if it falls out or is loose), call our office for help. Don't try to repair it or reattach it because this may cause an infection or a bad fit.

Insurance Coverage

Based on your dental insurance coverage, some of your costs may be paid. After talking to your insurance company, we can better calculate your out-of-pocket costs. At your consult, we will help you determine the best crown material that suits your needs and budget. We can also go over payment methods along with financing to help make your procedure affordable.
